Do you support the Black Lives Matter movement?

TSS News Room

Do you support the Black Lives Matter movement? Well it depends if you’re black or white, or young or old. It also depends on education and party affiliation.

BLM Support data June 2016As a recent Pew Research Center study found, 65 percent of black Americans convey some sort of support for the Black Lives Matter movement while 26 percent of white Americans are somewhat supportive. However, support drops for the movement when it comes to the kind of support.

For instance, only 41 percent of blacks strongly support the movement, which is a decrease of 24 percent from somewhat supportive. Similarly, support for the movement decreases by 12 percent, from 26 to 14 percent, if whites strongly support the Black Lives Matter movement. But what happens when education, age, and party affiliation are introduced?

When it comes to blacks with a bachelor’s degree or higher, skepticism about the eventual success of the movement begins to play a role. For example,

About three-in-ten (31%) of those with a bachelor’s degree or more education say that, in the long run, the movement won’t be too effective or won’t be effective at all, compared with about two-in-ten adults with less education.

More BLM data support for June 2016When it comes to whites, age and party affiliation are notable factors. 60 percent of whites between the ages of 18 and 29 support the Black Lives Matter movement. That is, 40 percent of those between 18 and 29 somewhat support the movement while 20 percent strongly support movement.

In addition, 64 percent of  democrats support the movement. Broken down, 35 percent are somewhat supportive while 29 percent are strongly supportive.

In contrast, only 25 percent of whites who are 65 years or older support the movement. That is, only 17 percent are somewhat supportive while 8 percent are strongly support (note there is an addition discrepancy in the Pew Research Center’s data chart).

Finally, the more republican a person is, the less likely he or she is to support the movement. For instance, only 20 percent of republicans support the Black Lives Matter movement.
